Task- You are an attorney defending OR prosecuting Mary Maloney. Your job is to convince a jury that she is guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.
Complete the sentence below:

Google/Youtube closing arguments in mock trials or real criminal cases. Take notes of what the defense attorney (defends the accused) or prosecutor include in their arguments so that you model your closing argument after them.
You MUST include the following information in your closing argument.
1st - Briefly explain what this trial is all about. (Refer to the task)
2nd - Explain the events and what the opposing attorney is trying to convince the jury of.
3rd - Explain that the opposing attorney is mistaken in his/her belief that Mary Maloney is guilty/not guilty.
4th - Now, explain your opinion by discussing the evidence (her words, behavior, thoughts, feelings, and interactions with her husband, grocer, police, etc - see the graphic organizer). Include facts from the story that support your opinion.
5th - Discuss what motivated Mary to kill her husband and how this shows her guilt or “insanity.”
6th - Close your argument by asking the jury to find Mary Maloney guilty/not guilty.

2. Students will be working on the accompanying questions for "The Lottery," as well as, create a plot diagram for the story. These are graded assignments. Questions must be answered by quoting the author's words to support your responses. Include the page number.

Week of 9/18/17-9/22/17: Short Story Unit
Monday- Wise Old Woman plot diagram is due at the beginning of class.
- Using Pixar Shorts ("Lifted" and "For the Birds") to determine plot, theme, etc.
Tuesday- Plot diagraming continues, but includes identifying the type of conflict, and is also graded. If needed, finish as homework. Due tomorrow. "Partly Cloudy" and "Piper" can be found on YouTube under Pixar short films.
Wednesday-Friday- "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson begins. We will be reading this story, practicing reading strategies, and identifying literary elements and plot development.
TEST- There will be an upcoming test on the elements of plot next week. Start studying now!
Week of 9/11/17-9/15/17: This week's focus is on organizational strategies, reading strategies, and the elements of literature.
Homework- Review vocabulary and definitions each evening. For example, plot, rising action, climax, falling action (denouement), resolution, theme, conflict, exposition, mood, etc. It's essential that you learn the meanings of these words as we will be using them frequently throughout the year (and in high school as well).
Bio poem, Wise Old Woman plot diagram, and friendly letter is homework if not completed during class.
